Can Sciatica Cause Arm Numbness

Sciatica Animation

Sciatica or sciatic neuralgia is a commoncondition in which one of the spinal nerve roots of the sciatic nerve is compressed resultingin lower back, buttock and leg pain. Sciatic nerve is a large nerve derived from 5 spinalnerve roots: L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3. It runs from the lumbar spine through the buttockdown the leg and the foot on the posterior aspect. There is one sciatic nerve on eachside of the body. Typically, only one side of the body is affected.A typical sciatica pain is described as a sharp shooting pain in the lower back, downthe buttock, thigh and leg on one side of the body. There may also be numbness, burningand tingling sensations. The pain can get

worse with sitting, moving, sneezing, or coughing. The patterns of pain depend on which nerve root is compressed, and follow the dermatomedistribution. The most common cause of sciatica is a herniatedspinal disc. The spinal disc is a soft elastic cushion that sits in between the vertebraeof the spine. With age, the discs become rigid and may crack, the gellike center of thedisc may protrude out and become a herniation outside the normal boundaries of the disc.Disc herniation presses on the nerve root as it exits the spine. In majority of the cases the condition resolves by itself after a few weeks of rest and conservativetreatment. Pain relief, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory

drugs and muscle relaxants may be prescribed.Stretching exercises and physical therapy may be recommended.Surgery may be needed if the pain doesn't go away after 3 months or more of conservativetreatments. The herniated disc may be removed in a procedure called discectomy. Or, in anotherprocedure called laminotomy, part of the bone of the vertebrae may be cut to make room forthe nerve.

Relief From 3 Years of Chronic Neck Pain Arm Numbness and Tingling Kevins Success Story

Hi, my name is Kevin P. For the past 3 yearsor so, I've been experiencing a lot of neck pain. Recently, I had numbness and tinglingin my arm and it was affecting my right arm, on a daily basis. The neck pain was very discomforting. While lying there in my sleep, I would have periodic episodes of extreme pain, makingit unbearable, couldn't function for a couple of days. I started coming to Back and Bodyfor about two months now. I've been going through multiple, different types of treatmentduring each visit. And after two months later, I can say I haven't; the past at least monthor so, I haven't had any neck pains or been having tingling or numbness. Very comfortableon a day to day basis now. My neck is very

relaxed. I sleep better. My day pretty muchgoes on without any pain. Generally speaking, I feel like I'm in better health. I feel alot better and I can continue with things I want to do without having to worry, constantlyworry, about more pain coming back.

Relief From Neck Pain Arm Pain and Hand Numbness Carolines Success Story

I first came to back and body with some prettysevere neck pain where I couldn't rotate and the pain would shoot down my arm and createnumbness in my fingers. So I came in, they did a lot of testing, I got XRay. They explainedthat I may have some structural issues like scoliosis and the things like that that areimpacting my neck vertebrae. And I have been coming in for a deep tissue massage wherethey are manipulating the muscle, the electric stim, and getting a weekly chiropractic experiencethat is good too. It really gave me a lot of relief from thepain. I do have to come in regularly because of my structural issues to get therapy onceor twice a week and it's enabling me to get

through the day without pain and to do thecasual tasks that I need to do. I do a lot of writing as a writing teacher, so withoutthe therapy the numbness would really make that impossible, so I have been pretty happycoming here.
